Compliance with Quality Standards and The Performance of Organizations: Case Studies of Some Fishing Companies in Guinea

Abstract

The adoption of a standard requires the commitment of the company's management and an understanding of the requirements. In addition, adopting the standard instills confidence in customers and business partners, including suppliers. (Lernoud et al., 2018). To maintain compliance with the ISO 22000 standard, it is necessary for the company to continuously train its staff in order to improve the performance of its management system (Ayyadi I, 2022). Under the obligation to comply with the ISO 22000 standard in 2006, all artisanal fishing companies in Guinea ended up disappearing, as none managed to bear the heavy investments. In 2021, a Guinean company managed to comply with EU fishing standards. Our study aims to highlight the significant impact of standardization on artisanal fishing activities in Guinea. Compliance with the standards directly influences performance, which is more important than the standards themselves (Kouamé, 2020). To address this research issue, we conducted a survey of 150 stakeholders in artisanal fishing. We used a quantitative methodology based on the operationalization of conformity variables to the norm and the associated costs. This approach involves a chi-squared test and compares the frequencies of the two data groups in order to infer a relationship between them. Hence the choice of evaluating the opportunity cost for these companies to conform. We thus contribute to indexing each operator's role in this standardization process, so that companies achieve the desired economic performance.
